It is an interesting question to ask because most of us don’t often think about how, when, and with whom we feel empowered or conversely when we become disempowered, or experience a power leak.
I have to be honest, I pose the question because I found myself feeling pretty disempowered lately and began to reflect inward and inquire around the source of it.
This is what I discovered; it was both a rude awakening and a relief.
- I use my very busy schedule as an excuse to NOT prioritize the things that matter most and what I know to be the absolute most crucial part of success in life: Radical Self Care.
- I doubt my inner wisdom and often seek answers from others. Now there is nothing wrong in obtaining counsel or guidance and at the end of the day, the answers we seek reside within and most of the time we know what we have to do and just need a little guidance with the how.
- I sometimes make excuses for my loved ones’ bad behavior when I find myself in a negative interaction with them rather than owning what is mine and acknowledging that they too have their own issues that have nothing to do with me. (This was probably the toughest one to realize because there is a fine line between getting to cause and taking ownership of your stuff and making excuses for others.)
How did I reclaim my power?
I pulled from all my tools:
NLP (neuro-linguistic programming), MER® (Mental and Emotional Release Therapy), and of course, Yoga
- I turned to the 2nd theme of NLP: Empowerment- Cause and Effect which I interpret as if you want results, you focus on that and get to cause (take responsibility for your interpretations) rather than swimming in your reasons/excuses, blaming others, or your external circumstances.
- I turned to my yoga/meditation practice and with svadhyaya/self study realized that often all it takes is quieting the chatter in the mind to receive and then TRUST your inner wisdom. Then I used MER® to release the limiting decision that I had made around doubting that wisdom and trusting myself.
- I got clear that my throat Chakra (the energy center of communication/our ability to speak and listen) was completely out of balance because I wasn’t LISTENING to my inner wisdom AND I had to SPEAK UP and set very clear boundaries around what is and is NOT acceptable in my relationships without making excuses for anyone’s bad behavior.
And now I pose the question to you...how do you give your power away?
Are you ready to take it back? How do you plan on doing that this week?
